In the fall of 1991, the Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council issued a joint call for proposals to create a collective management structure for independent theatre producers in Ontario. Arts administrator Lisa Nabieszko prepared a submission with extensive input from playwright/director Scott Burke and in consultation with the theatre community. This model was chosen by a peer jury from a range of submissions, and in September 1992, STAF opened its doors.Now in its eleventh year of operation, STAF continues to provide professional, affordable administration and promotion support to non-profit theatre companies and independent theatre artists in Ontario, while serving as a model and resource to other communities across Canada.
