Job Description:

Our client specializes in outsourced accounting services for a large variety of industries, and they are currently looking to hire a Controller for their growing team!

This motivated individual will be responsible for all reporting and accounting functions related to assigned client engagements. The Controller is able to handle day-to-day management of the account with limited supervision and guidance from the Account Manager.

Role and Responsibilities Include:
  • Install, design and set up basic small business accounting software.
  • Establish and implement basic accounting procedures.
    • Supervise the Staff Accountant on the account and provide necessary guidance and training when needed in the following areas:
      • Processing day-to-day transactions including A/R, A/P, payroll and benefits, and banking.
      • Preparation of all government returns (GST, HST, ETD, WSIB, EHT, T4s, T4As, T5s, etc.).
      • In very limited cases, the Controller may be responsible for the completion of these duties (to cover Staff Accountant’s absence, during start up and transition between Staff Accountants, etc.).
  • Analyze and reconcile accounts and prepare reconciliations in complex situations.
  • Monitor and manage cash flow, prepare budgets and forecasts.
  • Interact with clients’ year-end accountants and government auditors.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly and yearly financial statements and related working papers.
  • Interact with client to ensure financial statements make sense and provide explanation and analysis as required by clients.
  • Assist with scheduling issues and performance evaluations of Staff Accountants.

Job Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge of accounting consistent with someone near completion of the CPA program (can be learned through formal courses or learned on the job).
  • Knowledge of office/accounting systems, procedures and document flows consistent with someone who has at least five years good experience in an accounting office environment.
  • Interpersonal skills at a level where the client is confident that delivers a quality product and staff feel positive about their role.
    • Communication skills at a level where problems/issues are identified, analyzed, and solutions implemented in all but complex situations (in complex situations must be able to communicate and work with Account Managers to provide solutions).
    • A multi-client environment necessitates strong organizational skills.  Must be able to multi-task and prioritize.
    • Computer skills at a level where new programs and concepts can be learned rapidly and taught to staff (e.g. Sage 50, QuickBooks, MYOB, Sage 300, Business Vision, Excel, Internet Banking, and Payroll Systems).
    • Ability to work independently in situations of high isolations and independence.
  • Needs to be proactive in establishing procedures and providing instructions.
  • Needs to take ownership of the day-to-day responsibilities for all assigned client engagements.
  • Able to work in a positive manner and convey a positive image.
  • Needs to work consistently and to work toward completing objectives on a timely basis that may require extra hours and extra effort.
  • Needs to lead by example.
